Editorial review: 24 October 2026. No current numerical passport rank or investment cost is asserted. Verify the live index and official program requirements before proceeding.
Antigua and Barbuda may appear in your research when you compare second citizenship options for your family. A passport ranking gives one perspective on short-stay international access. The citizenship by investment process gives another perspective on eligibility, documentation and financial commitment. You need both, but they should not be confused.
Begin by identifying your objective. Are you seeking easier recurring travel, a second nationality, a residence plan or an investment opportunity? Those goals may overlap, yet the same document or transaction does not necessarily satisfy them all.

What the passport ranking can show
The official Henley Passport Index ranking allows you to consult the latest listed passport information. Henley explains that its index uses IATA data with supplementary research and compares 199 passports against 227 destinations. It describes monthly updates.
That does not mean an undated number in a search result is current. This guide avoids reporting a numerical rank because an exact 24 October 2026 value has not been independently verified. If a rank is important to your decision, check the live official entry and record the review date.
Read the methodology carefully. Visa-free entry, visa on arrival and electronic travel authorizations contribute to the access score. A pre-departure-approved e-Visa is not treated the same way. Access scoring is therefore broader than a list of countries where no advance action could ever be needed.
Examine the destinations you actually use
An aggregate score gives equal space to destinations that may have very different importance to you. A family with relatives in one country or an investor with regular meetings in another should review those destinations individually.
Check official entry rules for your intended activity, trip length and passport. Short-stay access does not necessarily authorize employment, long-term study or residence. Border authorities can still ask questions and require evidence. Electronic authorization rules can also matter even when a conventional visa is unnecessary.
Use the government unit as the program starting point
Antigua and Barbuda's Citizenship by Investment Unit is the official authority for program information. Its citizenship and legislation materials and application guidance provide a starting point for checking requirements.
Ask a qualified professional to explain the currently applicable route and application channel. Contributions and approved investment options should be assessed against current official rules, not assumed from a previous year's article. Fees and financial requirements are intentionally not quoted here because a dated verification is necessary.
Make family eligibility a first-stage question
Define your intended family application before comparing investments. Ask which relatives may qualify, what evidence is needed and what rules apply to later additions. Family relationships that seem obvious in daily life still require appropriate official records in an application.
Clarify any ongoing requirements associated with citizenship obtained through the program. In particular, ask about current presence or other obligations directly with the official unit and professional advisors. Do not assume that obtaining a passport marks the end of every responsibility or administrative step.
Prepare documentation with consistency
Citizenship review is not simply a payment process. Personal records, background information and source-of-funds explanations need to be accurate and coherent. Names, dates and family relationships should match across documents or be supported by appropriate explanations.
Ask what translations, certifications or further records may be required for your circumstances. Avoid promises that a difficult document can be ignored or that a commercial investment guarantees official approval. The competent authority makes the citizenship decision under the applicable framework.
Investment quality needs its own analysis
If you are considering an investment-based route, examine its commercial characteristics separately from its program eligibility. Approval of a project for a citizenship route is not a promise of investment performance. Investigate contractual rights, costs, management arrangements and exit restrictions with appropriate independent advice.
For any route, compare the full commitment: government charges, qualifying investment or contribution, professional fees and possible ongoing costs. Understand what each payment covers and the circumstances, if any, in which it can be recovered. A single advertised starting price rarely explains the entire decision.
Place citizenship within your broader plan
Second citizenship does not automatically change tax residence or remove obligations connected with your existing nationality. If you intend to live in another destination, its residence rules still require separate attention. Banking and asset-holding arrangements should also be reviewed on their own terms.
A practical shortlist records both advantages and unresolved questions. Update it when your family circumstances or relevant rules change. The result should be a reasoned destination choice rather than a decision based solely on a league-table position.

What the underlying passport index actually counts
Henley describes an IATA-based methodology covering 199 passports and 227 destinations, updated monthly. Its travel-access score includes visa-free travel, visa on arrival and electronic travel authorizations (ETA) that do not require advance visa approval. It does not count an e-visa requiring prior approval as visa-free. The score measures short-stay tourist or business entry under specified assumptions, not immigration, tax residence, the right to work, or admission guarantees. Antigua and Barbuda: official investment reference points
The official Citizenship by Investment Unit lists a National Development Fund contribution from USD 230,000, and an approved real estate option from USD 300,000. Both require other charges and compliance checks. Visa-waiver arrangements can change for reasons unrelated to an individual application; do not infer lifetime visa-free access from an old ranking.
